Itasca, IL, November 16, 2003 - Knowles Acoustics' SiSonic Surface Mount Microphone was recognized as a 2003 Small Times Magazine Best of Small Tech Product Award Finalist. Jeffrey Niew, VP and GM of Knowles Acoustics will accept the award at the NanoCommerce 2003 conference in Chicago on Dec. 9. The 2003 Small Times Magazine Best of Small Tech Awards recognize the best people, products and companies in nanotechnology, MEMS and microsystems. "The 2003 Small Times Magazine Best of Small Tech Award winners and finalists are already impacting lives," said Steve Crosby, President and Publisher of Small Times Media. "Small tech is passing the research and development stage; now it's being incorporated in real products." Knowles' SiSonic Microphone represents a low-cost, high-performance alternative to traditional ECMs. Unlike traditional ECMs SiSonic is supplied on tape-and-reel and can be run through standard automatic pick-n-place and surface mount equipment. Manufactured from poly-silicon, this revolutionary microphone takes advantage of semi-conductor manufacturing processes that result in a robust microphone that yields a high degree of repeatability, stable acoustic performance, and flexibility for future design enhancements. They meet industry and customer requirements for heat, shock, vibration and longevity, and at the same time help lower customers' overall microphone installation costs. Commenting on the award, Jeffrey Niew, VP and General Manager of Knowles Acoustics, said, "This is a great acknowledgement to the Knowles team and all the partners who have helped achieve this accomplishment. We have demonstrated success in the mobile phone industry and continue to penetrate other markets with our surface mount microphone technology. It is also a great story for the MEMS industry" The recipients of the Small Times Magazine Best of Small Tech Awards, along with the finalists, were selected by nominations and applications submitted by companies and individuals. Small Times Media news staff and an industry panel of experts reviewed the applicants and selected one winner and four finalists in six categories, plus lifetime achievement and other. The panel considered accomplishments between October 1, 2002 and September 1, 2003. A complete list of winners and finalists can be found in the November/December issue of Small Times magazine and online at www.smalltimes.com.
